Tue, 22 September 2009 ![]() Photo: Couple by the riverfront. Hi there, I’m Jack and welcome back to Lithuanian Out Loud where we offer the world the Lithuanian language. Today we’ll continue with the interviews Raminta made at a Lithuanian party with Ingrida. This will be part three. The last episode with Ingrida, part IV, will probably be our next podcast. In the background you can hear lots of frogs in a nearby pond, music and people talking. In this interview Raminta is asking Ingrida another question. Keep in mind Ingrida has no idea what Raminta is going to ask her. As I record this introduction, Raminta is in Istanbul, Turkey. Raminta and I recorded this episode quickly just before she left. Now, on with Ingrida’s thoughts. Enjoy! --- Kokie tau yra trys svarbiausi kriterijai vyre, kurie turėtų būti? Ar charakterio savybės, ar... --- Alright, now let‘s translate the conversation and then we‘ll break down many of the words and use them in examples. Alright, let‘s break some of this down... importance svarba Comments[10] |
She was born to native Lithuanian parents who emigrated here after WW II ... I find her and her families culture very interesting ... in that they all speak Lithuanian and I am always meeting folks with English as their second language ...
While I am proud of my heritage, we do little to keep the language, customs or much of anything near the surface of our celebrations with family ... when I visit her home or that of any of theirs, I see artwork, sculptures, etc. all over the place ...
Anyway, I wanted to tell you how much I appreciate the podcasts ... it helps me learn better when I can view the spellings while listening ... and they all get a big kick that I'm bothering to learn at all ...
Thanks much.
Duok man savo ranką - give me your hand
would be
Bana (senin) elini ver,
and to put the Lithuanian in the Turkish word order you could say Man savo ranką duok (I assume that's okay). The difference is that the Turkish genitive gets put on the noun as well (that's why you can take out the pronoun if you want) but since that complication is only in Turkish it doesn't make Lithuanian any more difficult to learn.

I think I can help Skywalker with a translation: 1) dovanojimas - pardon, forgiveness; in German: Vergebung 2) trapu = instrumental case of trapas - gangway; in German e.g.: Laufsteg 3) saulute = diminutive of saule - sun; in German: Sonne 4) rozine = female form to rozinis - pink; in German: rosa. Sorry, Tomris, but Raminta was on a plane back to Lithuania by the time this episode was published. It was a short trip.
So, Turkish has cases as well? I guess I won't be learning Turkish. I think cases are soooo hard to learn. :)
Thanks for the help Boris!!!
My name is Luke,
I found your website through google.com
I think it is brilliant.
The reason I have decided to start learning Lithuanian
is because I have a new girlfriend who is from Lithuania.
She loves it when I woo her in her own language.
I was wondering whether you could please help me learn some romantic phrases.
I am usually terrible learning languages,
but using your site I have learnt suprisingly extremley quick.
Do you reckon you could make another one of your pod-casts just about being romantic?
Or if you already have one, point me towards it.
Thank you for your time
Luke
Good luck with your romantic adventures in Lithuanian!
~ Jack :)
